'Athirasam' roughly that translates to excess/boundless of sweetness is true to its name. Origin of Athirasam is said to trace back to reign of Krishnadevaraya. Many states of India hold claim for this sweet patty. This disc shaped ghee jaggery dessert is popular in Tamil culture and often made as prasada in temples across South India.

Deeply embedded in tamil culture, Athirasam takes a front seat during auspicious occasions like weddings and seemantham. It's also made during festivals like Deepavali, Karthigai Deepam and Janmashtami. This iron-rich sweet is usually made the previous night of Deepavali by some communities. There is a popular saying that a person can be claimed as half cook only when he/she knows to make Athirasam.
