The Story of Krishna Janmashtami: Celebrating Janmashtami with South Indian Flavours

Enthusiasm is over the roof with Janmashtami celebration around the corner. To welcome the birth of Lord Krishna, devotees all across the country observe fasts, pray at home, prepare a Janmashtami bhog, go to the temple, and of course celebrate with cheer, dance and music. Krishna, the 8th child of Devaki and Vasudev, is the 8th Avatar of Lord Vishnu, and it is said that he was born on Janmashtami to defeat the demon and brother of Devaki: King of Mathura, Kansa.

In many regions today, to celebrate Lord Krishna, the festival includes events like Dahi Handi where kids form human pyramids to break the Dahi Matkas hung above - mirroring Lord Krishna’s love for Makhan.

The main highlight is the celebration that happens at midnight, commemorating Lord Krishna’s Birth in the Mathura prison. Lord Krishna’s idol is bathed in Panchamrit by families and dressed up in new clothes and jewellery.

Charnamrit is made for baby Krishna, and delicious sweets and snacks are prepared for the family. A Janmashtami bhog is prepared and had after offering to God, as Krishna Janmashtami Prasad.

In the South Indian region, sweet delicacies like Wheat Halwa, Athirasam Sweet Murukku, and Vella Seedai are a part of the bhog for Krishna Janmashtami and the family members of all ages enjoy mouth-watering snacks like Ribbon Pakoda, Madras Mixture, Classic Seedai, and Kara Boondi.

These traditional and Janmashtami favourite sweets and snacks are known for their rich flavours of Ghee, Jaggery, Rice & Gram Flour, Spices, and Aromatics.
