Gongura pachadi or thokku (pulicha keerai in Tamil / sorrel leaves in English) is a fantastic recipe from Andhra cuisine. It is apt to say it is Andhra's gift to the rest of India!
The only variety of leafy vegetable which is consumed without any inhibition during the monsoons is probably Gongura/ sorrel leaves. Known as gongura in Telugu, ambadi in Marathi, pulichakeerai in Tamil, tenga mora in Assamese, the plant is called pitwaa in Hindi, khata palanga in Oriya, and mestapat in Bengali. This basically goes to show that sorrel leaves are consumed widely in India.
Gongura leaves are a rich source of iron, vitamins, folic acid and anti-oxidants essential for human nutrition. It is also an excellent source of vitamins like vitamin A, vitamin B1 (thiamin), vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B9 (folic acid) and vitamin C. They are rich in essential minerals like calcium, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium and iron. It is a healing green which helps to prevent or treat scurvy as it is rich in Vitamin C.
Due to the sourness, Vitamin C and Iron content, it strengthens the digestive power, improves appetite, boosts the immune system as well as helps in enhancing Haemoglobin level. The leaves also contain calcium and considered very good for consumption for women over 40 years, for maintaining good bone health naturally and to prevent osteoporosis.
It is tangy, tempting and absolutely finger licking. It is best served with rice, idli or dosa.
