Krishna Janmashtami, also called Gokulashtami/ Krishna Jayanti is the celebration of the birth of Lord Krishna. Known as one of the most revered festivals in India, this year the joyous occasion is on 26 August 2024. Every year special Janmashtami Prasad is prepared to be kept as ‘Bhog’ for Lord Krishna. Making and offering prasad to Lord Krishna is a divine tradition that is an integral part of the festivities.

1. Dhaniya Panjiri

Dhaniya Panjiri is a prasad for janmashtami offered to Lord Krishna and then commonly eaten as a way to break the fast. This is a nutritious prasad filled with rich and aromatic ingredients. Many people make Dhaniya Panjiri in different ways, let’s look a fairly easy and authentic way to prepare: 

Time Taken to Prepare: 10-15 minutes.

Complete Cooking Time: 10 Minutes. 

Making Dhaniya Panjiri: Heat 1/2 cup ghee in a pan and add around 1 cup of coriander (dhaniya) powder, roast it on low flame till it is golden with an aromatic scent. Now mix chopped dry fruits like cashews, almonds, raisins (about 1/4th cup in total) and continue to roast for about 3 minutes on medium flame. As an optional step, you can also add dried coconut and chopped makhana and roast them briefly. 

Let the mixture cool down slightly, on the side blend ½ cup of sugar and 1 tsp of cardamom powder together and add it to the mixture. Finally add some rose petals, and there you go, Dhaniya Panjiri is ready!

This fragrant and flavorful mixture can be offered as Prasad or enjoyed as a nutritious snack, and it can be stored in an airtight container for up to a week.

2. Makhana Paag

Makhana Paag is usually made as a prasad for Janmashtami as well as for new mothers. Makhana is a very rich source of calcium and is said to be one Lord Krishna’s favourite treat. 

Time Taken to Prepare: 15- 20 minutes.

Complete Cooking Time: 20 Minutes. 

First take 50 Grams of Makhana seeds and cut each Makhana into 4-5 pieces each. Now preheat a Kadhai and add 150 grams of Ghee and bring it up to heat. Now slowly add the cut pieces of Makhana into the ghee to fry them till they are golden. Now in a new Kadhai, put 250 grams of sugar and 80-85 grams of water and on a medium flame stir the mixture till it turns into a sticky syrup (make sure the colour is very light golden). Now turn off the flame and add the Makhanna in the same Kadhai and stir until the Makhana is completely coated with sugar syrup. Set it to cold down for 2 hours. A sweet and delicious janmashtami bhog prasad is now ready! 

3. Panchamrit

Luckily not all Lord Krishna’s favourites require to be cooked on a flame. ‘Panchamrit’ is made of 2 words ‘Panch’ referring to the 5 core ingredients and ‘Amrit’ referring to the nectar of immortality. One of the most popular janmashtami prasad items, Panchamrit is a staple prasad made in homes and hindu temples.

Time Taken to Prepare: 10 minutes.

Complete Cooking Time: 5 Minutes. 

  1. Yogurt ( Dahi) - 2 Tbsp
  2. Milk - 1/2 Cup 
  3. Desi Ghee  - 1/4 Tbsp
  4. Honey - 1/2 Tbsp
  5. Sugar - 1/2 Tbsp

Just take a bowl (Silver utensil is highly recommended), put all the ingredients and mix well until all the ingredients are combined. Garnish with tulsi with leaves. 

4. Makhan Mishri 

The stories of Nada Lalla (Lord Krishna) show us just how much he loves Makhan, we have all grown up listening to his mischief as the “Makhan Chor”. Hence, Makhan Mishri is undoubtedly one of the best Janmashtami Prasad to make. 

Makhan Mishri recipe requires only a few ingredients, fresh Malai, Water, Ice and Mishri. 

Time Taken to Prepare: 10 minutes.

Complete Cooking Time: 15 Minutes. 

Take about 2 cups of fresh milk malai, add a little water and whisk it well. Then add 4-5 ice cubes and whisk again till the Makhan separates from the water. Now gently remove Makhan in a bowl. Add Mishri to the fresh Makhan and that’s it! You Makhan Mishri is ready!

5. Mawa Kheer (Khoya Kheer)

This is not our ordinary rice kheer, Mawa Kheer (Khoya Kheer) is much richer and creamier kheer made with adding milk solids like ‘Mawa’ or ‘Khoya’. Made on special occasions of Indian Festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, Navratri, Diwali, this is a great Janmashtami prasad recipe for you to try.

Time Taken to Prepare: 10 minutes.

Complete Cooking Time: 1 Hour. 

Rinse and drain basmati rice. In a heavy-bottomed pan, heat ghee and melt grated khoya until it forms a pasty liquid. Now add rice and sauté for a few minutes. Now in a small bowl warm milk and add saffron to infuse the flavour- keep it aside. Now pour remaining milk along with sugar in the Khoya-rice mixture. Bring it all to boil then keep it simmer for 30 mins. Stir occasionally till milk becomes slightly pink and rice is cooked. Add saffron and cardamom on the top. Serve warm or cold, as preferred. You can also add some chopped Pista and Almond on the top.
